We would like to extend a huge congratulations to Brenda Barton who is celebrating an impressive 35 year work anniversary in June!  On June 3, 1982, one week after graduating from high school, Brenda began her career with the Texas A&M Physical Plant.  Brenda currently works for the Maintenance Department as Business Administrator.  She has definitely worked her way up over the years and we’d like to share Brenda’s story.  When she started working for A&M’s Physical Plant, it was located where the North Side parking garage currently stands.  She started as a wage worker, or part-time worker, in the carpenter shop as a Clerk I.  In 1982, time was kept manually by paperwork, coloring in the hours, work order numbers, etc., and all work orders were hand written!  Brenda was promoted to a full-time position helping out in various areas such as the mailroom and Custodial front office and she also spent a few months working in Area Maintenance 5.  Later, Brenda was able to move back into the Clerk position in the Carpenter Shop, and in 1985, the whole department moved to the current Facilities Services building on Agronomy Road.  Employees were issued brand new Mac computers and Brenda commented, “Boy, was that a learning curve!”  Brenda was with the carpenter shop for a total of about 23 years.  During that time, the Physical Plant went through various computer programs for keeping time and setting up work orders.  During those years, Brenda was promoted to Clerk II and later, to a Senior Office Assistant. 


Around 2010, when the construction shops were split up, the area maintenance shops were then headquartered at the main Facilities Services building.  A couple of months before the transition to SSC happened in August 2012, Brenda was asked to take over the Administrative Assistant role in the Manager’s Suite, where she assisted managers with the transition.  Some of Brenda’s tasks included creating several different spreadsheets for tracking staff, licenses, iPhones, trainings and more.  When the mangers were dispersed to other areas, Brenda was moved to the AggieWorks office area.  There, some of her main responsibilities were keeping the master staffing spreadsheets up-to-date, keeping track of the maintenance staff’s state licenses and certifications, hiring of maintenance techs, setting up interviews and ensuring all the paperwork was turned into Human Resources. 


In February 2014, Brenda was promoted to Supervisor of the AggieWorks team, where she oversaw the AggieWorks staff as well as the maintenance shop coordinators.  During that time, Brenda was a key player in the creation of the AggieWorks Playbook, which is essentially a road map of the AggieWorks processes and procedures.  


In March of this year, Brenda was asked to be a supporting link between the backend of our work order system, AiM, and Human Resources.  In this role, Brenda will continue to maintain the trade licenses, certifications, staff training and zone assignments.  She continues to provide excellent customer service by following up with customers who complete work order surveys to ensure that their needs are being met. 


Brenda was born in Caldwell and raised in the Frenstat community, which is in the Caldwell area.  She still resides in the Frenstat community, which Brenda proudly says is definitely “out in the country!”  She has been married to her best friend, Keith Barton, for 29 years.  Keith works for SSC’s Engineering, Design and Construction Services Department as a Superintendent II.  Brenda and Keith are proud parents of Gracie, a 3 year old blue heeler, and Patches, a 12 year old calico. They take Gracie camping in their new RV and she loves to play fetch and Frisbee.  Brenda and Keith have numerous nieces and nephews, who they absolutely adore and love very much.  Last fall, they welcomed their first grandnephew and they are very excited to announce that another is on the way.


Brenda and Keith relish weekends away in their RV, where they enjoy sitting by a fire and just spending time in the great outdoors.  Brenda loves music of any kind and says Mexican food is her favorite.  When she’s not taking trips in the RV, she loves a good vacation destination.  Brenda has traveled to places such as the beaches of Giulianova, Italy, Seward, Alaska and Lake Almanor, California.  Brenda and Keith are looking forward to an upcoming trip to Mexico this summer! 


Brenda’s favorite quote is, “If you work hard and you do your best, you can do anything.”  Brenda is a shining example that hard work and dedication truly pays off.  She is a wealth of information and many of our employees go to her with various questions.  Brenda says she truly enjoys working with others and tries to be as helpful as she can.  If she doesn’t know the answer to something, she will try her darnedest to find it or at least point someone in the right direction.
