CUSTODIAN EARNS COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER CERTIFICATE
Blanca Macareno (L) presents Carmen Mulske (R) with her Community Health Worker certification
SSC is very proud of Senior Custodian Carmen Mulske who works in our Northwest Custodial Crew. In late June, Carmen was recognized in a ceremony for completing a Community Health Worker (CHW) certification course through the National Community Health Worker Training Center within Texas A&M University’s School of Public Health. The 160 hour course, taught in both English and Spanish, was held at Workforce Solutions in Bryan and led by CHW instructor, Blanca Macareno. Ms. Macareno is a public health doctoral student at TAMU’s Health Science Center School of Public Health. She thoroughly enjoyed having Carmen as a student, saying that she was very interactive during the classroom time.
Many might wonder about the role of a community health worker. According to Texas A&M Health Science Center’s website containing information from the National Community Health Worker Training Center, a Community Health Worker (CHW) is a person who connects individuals to needed health care and social services. A CHW is a trusted member of the community, with a close understanding of the ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, and life experiences of the community they serve. CHWs can work in health care systems, with community organizations, or as volunteers to expand knowledge and access to available health resources. CHWs are also referred to as promotores.” A few examples of tasks that CHWs can do include educating community members on health knowledge and behaviors, raising community awareness of available resources, interacting with populations that are underserved by existing services and bridging cultural gaps and providing translation between languages.
Carmen has worked on the TAMU campus for the past 13 years. She is currently studying for her GED and plans to graduate in 2018. Carmen’s SSC supervisor, Brenda Jackson, speaks very highly of her saying that Carmen is very polite and a great team player. Brenda goes on to say that Carmen takes pride in her tasks and delivers excellent customer service. SSC is delighted to have Carmen on staff and we are cheering her on as she completes her goals.
Way to go, Carmen!
