CUSTODIAL HOSTS APPRECIATION BANQUET

September 10-16 marked International Housekeepers Week (IHW).  To celebrate, Custodial Services hosted a beautiful appreciation banquet on Friday, September 22 at the Zone Club at Kyle Field in honor of not only this week but also National Custodial Workers Recognition Day, which was officially celebrated on October 2.

Every custodial associate – the department has well over 500 - was invited to enjoy a delicious lunch and the chance to win a variety of prizes, including a big screen TV. Ted Dawson, Regional Director of Operations, addressed his crew, thanking them for the tireless work they do day in and day out.  Ted excitedly says, “IHW is my favorite celebration of the year. It give us the opportunity to thank the hardest working crew on campus. I love having the ability to interact with the entire crew as we serve them lunch. I am honored and blessed to have the opportunity to lead such amazing people.”

A group of students from Unsung Heroes was present.  Unsung Heroes is a student organization that was started at Georgetown University; the group focuses on promoting awareness and appreciation for behind-the-scenes workers that oftentimes go unrecognized and unappreciated.  Senior Connor Feist is the president for the Unsung Heroes A&M campus chapter.  This past summer, he approached SSC to see what he and his organization members could do to help appreciate and truly honor the unsung heroes of this campus.  For this particular appreciation banquet, Connor and multiple other students provided centerpieces and handwritten thank-you notes for the custodial staff. They also helped with set up, serving lunch, handing out raffle tickets and just going around the room visiting with our custodial staff and thanking them for all they do.  Connor remarked, "I know that the students, faculty and staff here at Texas A&M appreciate everything that our campus workers do day in and day out to make sure that we have a clean and enjoyable environment.”  SSC would like to thank Connor and all of the student volunteers who helped out at the banquet: Sarah Marsh, Lindsey Uhlik, Alison Crane, Paul McCullough, Kyle Cantu, Trey Scudder, Ben Lacey, Carlos Ramirez, Austin Thrash, Gabe Garza and Brooke Wilson.

Special thanks to Assistant Manager Madlene Maxwell for all of her hard work on planning the event.  Custodial Services would also like to thank Athletics for allowing them to use their space for this event the past couple of years.  A big thank you to PJ Saidler and his team with our sister company, Levy, for catering the lunch.

Madlene remarked, “I would like to thank our entire Custodial department for their hard work and dedication to TAMU and Compass Group/SSC. Everyone in our department is responsible for the success we’ve had and without our frontline associates, leadership teams, supervisors, office support staff and our fearless leader, Ted Dawson, we would not be the great department we are today. Let’s continue to strive for excellence and continue to be the model others want to be.”

A portion of the event also honored Custodial Administrative Assistant, Alicia Rodriguez, who retired after working a total of 29 years on campus (24 for A&M and 5 for SSC).  Please refer to the article on Alicia’s retirement to read more about her.
