Staff Appreciation Week 2018 was a huge success! The week kicked off on Monday, April 23 with the 31st annual President’s Meritorious Service Awards ceremony and reception. SSC custodian Faustina Herrera was one of the 25 outstanding staff members recognized with this prestigious award. We have dedicated a separate article in this issue to Faustina entitled Custodian Faustina Herrera Receives PMSA.
Staff Development Day was held on Tuesday. The morning session began with a fabulous keynote address by President Young followed by The Power of Encouragement presented by Shawn Andaya-Pulliam, Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Famer. Associate Professor & Presidential Impact Fellow of the Mays Business School, Stephen Courtright, Ph.D., spoke on Becoming a Leader: Avoiding Pitfalls and Maximizing Opportunities. Chartwells catered a delicious networking lunch. Texas A&M Provost Carol A. Fierke kicked off the afternoon session with a keynote address. Arthur Watson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Transition Academic Programs & Chair of the AAPO Governing Committee spoke on Personal to Professional: The importance of development and work-life balance. The afternoon session wrapped up with Social Media and You: Managing Your Online Brand, presented by Krista Smith, Director of Social Media for Texas A&M University’s Division of Marketing & Communications.
Wednesday marked department appreciation day. This day was set aside for individual units to host special appreciation events/activities within their respective offices. All kinds of events took place across campus from departments enjoying meals together to heading to the movies to even visiting Waco’s Magnolia Market. SSC served 2 donuts to each and every one of our associates. We ordered 180 dozen donuts!
Community Discount Day was held on Thursday. Several of the SAW committee members worked with the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce to ask local businesses to offer discounts to staff on this day. Campus businesses participated as well. Many restaurants around town participated from Blaze Pizza to Mad Taco. Some businesses even offered discounts through the entire SAW week, including the MSC Bookstore, Chartwells campus dining locations, Bed Bath & Beyond and even Douglass Nissan!
Friday’s event was the Wellness Walk and Fitness Friday at the Rec. Staff gathered at either Sul Ross Statue in Academic Plaza or at the grassy plaza between West Campus Library and Bio/Bio. TAMU Executive VP and CFO Dr. Jerry Strawser lead the East campus team and VP Dr. Barbara Abercrombie led the West campus team. Both groups met at the Rec for a rally held on the beautiful terrace. Healthy snacks were served by Chartwells and participants had chances to win fitness related prizes such as gym memberships. The Rec offered various activities to staff including a yoga and meditation session and free use of the rock wall, outdoor pool, free play basketball, pickleball, table tennis and racquetball. Rec Center trainers were even on hand for staff to ask them exercise related questions.
Staff Photo Day was held on Saturday morning; this event was a gift from President and Mrs. Young to all university staff. Staff and their families, significant other, friends, extended family and pets were invited to come to campus to get their photos professionally taken at iconic campus locations including the Century Tree, Academic Plaza, Military Walk, Rudder Fountain, Aggie Ring, Admin Building and Kyle Field. Two weeks after the event, staff will be able to access a website archive to select one of two high-quality, retouched photographs to download and print if desired.
For those TAMU, SSC and Chartwells associates who were unable to attend the week’s events due to their work schedules and nature of their positions, Sarah Boreen and Melissa Loyd of the Staff Appreciation Week committee arranged for them to receive boxed lunches catered by Chartwells and goody bags generously donated by Morningstar Storage.
What a wonderful week!
Thank you, President Young, for including SSC in Staff Appreciation Week. We are very grateful to be included as part of the Aggie family!
