ALMA VILLARREAL ANNOUNCED AS GREEN CUSTODIAL AWARD RECIPIENT
At October’s Sustainability Dinner with a Prof, Custodial associate Alma Villarreal was presented with the Green Custodial Award from Residence Life. As stated on Residence Life’s sustainability webpage, for the Green Custodial Award, students nominate individual custodians in their halls, or anywhere on campus, who go above and beyond for recycling. The Sustainability Awards Committee reviews the applications and makes the final decision. The individual with the most nominations is not necessarily guaranteed to win. In other words, custodians who service large halls like Hullabaloo do not have an advantage over the custodians from Appelt. Submissions are judged by who can provide the most compelling examples of the nominee contributing to recycling.
Residence Life staff realize that Alma is not a custodian. Alma is actually in charge of uniforms for each and every custodial associate. Alma goes above and beyond in everything she does. She works extensively within SSC to promote recycling and sustainability. Not only does Alma work to make sure custodial staff are educated on recycling within their assigned halls, but Alma also works tirelessly to make sure the packaging and boxes in which SSC custodians receive their supplies are not thrown into the landfill. Most recently, Alma volunteered to be the SSC representative for Residence Life's upcoming Trex Plastic Film challenge. This challenge will involve collecting various forms of plastic film (produce bags, Ziploc bags, plastic pallet wrap, etc.) over a six month time period. The goal is to collect over 500 pounds of plastic. Residence Life staff say that, “Alma is an outstanding person who holds recycling and sustainability close to her heart. Her energy and drive is unmatched in promoting sustainable habits within our residence halls.”
Congratulations, Alma! SSC is very proud of you and thankful for your commitment and enthusiasm toward sustainability.
