EDCS Celebrates Staff Appreciation Week

Staff Appreciation Week 2019 was a huge success! The week kicked off on Monday, April 22 with the 32nd annual President’s Meritorious Service Awards ceremony and reception.

The Wellness Walk was held on Tuesday of Staff Appreciation Week. Staff could join either the East Campus Team or West Campus Team, depending on proximity and convenience. The East Campus Team met on the front steps of the Jack K. Williams Administration Building. The West Campus Team met on the grassy plaza between the West Campus Library and Bio/Bio building. Staff were encouraged to wear maroon and/or white workout gear. Both teams met for a pre-walk warm-up and then began the short walk to the 12th Man Statue area outside of Kyle Field for a fun rally and tasty wraps generously donated by Salata. Each staff member who attended the walk received a commemorative SAW 12th Man Towel, which were maroon with white lettering this year.

Wednesday marked Department Appreciation Day. This day was set aside for individual units to host special appreciation events/activities within their respective offices. All kinds of events took place across campus from departments enjoying meals together to heading to the movies to going bowling at Grand Station. SSC’s HR team provided Shipley kolaches to all associates.

The Active for Life Conference was held on Thursday of Staff Appreciation Week at the Texas A&M Hotel & Conference Center. SAW partnered with the Texas A&M Center for Population Health and Aging (CPHA) to host this interactive conference focusing on health and wellness. Attendees discovered innovative solutions to age-related issues and received expert information and guidance from representatives of community-based organizations, healthcare organizations, government entities, and academic institutions. The morning began with a keynote address entitled The State of Health and Aging by Percy Divine III, Regional Administrator for the Administration on Aging. Attendees were then able to choose from various morning breakout sessions on topics ranging from Caring for the Caregivers to Fearless Financial Fitness: Easy Budget Solutions to Healthy Eating: Food for Life. While attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch, Todd Whitthorne, Author, Speaker, Chief Innovation Officer for Naturally Slim spoke on The 5 Most Surprising Things You Should be Doing to Live a Long, Happy and Productive Life. A variety of afternoon breakout sessions were offered, including Difficult Dialogues for Enhancing Conversations, Healthy Aging Horizons, Therapeutic Creativity, Vital Veterans Issues, and more.

Community Discount Day was held on Friday. Several of the SAW committee members worked with the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce to ask local businesses to offer discounts to staff on this day. Campus businesses participated as well. Many restaurants around town participated from Bed, Bath & Beyond to Fuddruckers. Some businesses even offered discounts through the entire SAW week, including the Barnes & Noble Campus Bookstore, Rosa’s Café, and even Allen Samuels Chevrolet Buick GMC.

Staff Photo Day was held on Saturday morning; this event was a gift from President and Mrs. Young to all University staff. Staff and their families, significant others, friends, extended family, and pets were invited to visit campus to get their photos professionally taken at iconic campus locations including the Century Tree, Academic Plaza, Military Walk, Admin Building, and Kyle Field. There were a total of eighteen photo locations! Beginning on May 13, staff who attended the event will be able to access a website archive to access high-quality, retouched photographs to download and print if desired.

For those TAMU, SSC, and Chartwells associates who were unable to attend the week’s events due to their work schedules and nature of their positions, Sarah Boreen and Melissa Loyd of the Staff Appreciation Week committee coordinated for them to receive boxed lunches catered by Chartwells and goody bags generously donated by Elaina Ross of Morningstar Storage.

What a wonderful week! Thank you, President Young, for including SSC in Staff Appreciation Week.

SSC is very grateful to be included as part of the Aggie family!
