Engineering, Design, & Construction Services played a role in the ongoing MSC street replacement project. This project, which is part of the MSC street planning project, started in 2018. The scope of the project included redoing Joe Routt Blvd. and Gene Stallings Blvd.
Sometime between 2014 – 2018, Clark Street was changed to Gene Stallings Blvd., after former Texas A&M University football player and head coach Eugene Clifton Stallings, Jr.
Chief Civil/Structural Engineer Mikael “Mike” Olsen, Ph.D, P.E. managed the project. He also managed the original project, too, which replaced asphalt with concrete back in 2004. Mike commented that Brazos Paving, the contractor, is playing a large role in this current project and is on an “extremely ambitious and tight schedule” to complete the project by the beginning of the Fall 2019 Semester.
EDCS Project Manager Nevin Brown is representing SSC on the second phase of this project. Nevin remarks, “This is the first project I was assigned to when I started at SSC. Having the opportunity to work with an effective team including Transportation Services, Brazos Paving, and Kimley-Horn and Associates, made this first experience a true pleasure.”
During the initial phase, this project involved coordination with the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center, which at the time, was still under construction. Access to the Memorial Student Center had to be coordinated through the dock area. Utilities & Energy Services (UES) was doing replacement of thermal and water lines. They installed HDPE (high density polyethylene piping).
Joe Routt Blvd. was worked on first and then the team moved on to Gene Stallings Blvd. The original 5 and 8 foot sidewalks were widened to 16’ and 20’ to provide better pedestrian access to Kyle Field and the Cain Garage.
Work on the two phase street replacement project continues. Currently, the team is working on the second phase which includes W. Lamar on the North side of the MSC and Houston St., where the new Student Services Building is being constructed. This will include a 20’ wide sidewalk, new transit shelters, lighting, and landscaping. This project requires extremely close coordination with the Student Services Building and Vaughn Construction. After football season, work will continue to progress along West Lamar from Gene Stallings to the Bell Tower in front of the 21st Century Classroom Building.
Kimley-Horn and Associates, who specialize in planning and design engineering consultation, is the engineer for this project. Kimley-Horn and Associates Vice President, Chris Harris, P.E., C.F.M., has been working on the project since its inception. “We originally began envisioning this project and developing concepts with Transportation Services in 2012. This project will truly transform the area in regard to traffic safety, transit, bike facilities, and pedestrian access. I’m proud to have been able to partner with SSC and Transportation Services to see this project through from early concepts through construction.”
With the A&M campus growing, the street replacement project became a necessity. SSC is thrilled to be a part of this exciting project as we help campus grow and accommodate the many moving parts that count on using the streets surrounding the MSC.
