SSC annually distributes a survey to all employees seeking their opinions as to what we can do better as a company. Results from Grounds Maintenance personnel indicated that they wanted better communication and more action from management to address their concerns. We hear you!!!
Phillip Zellner, RDO for Grounds at Texas A&M, gathered the Grounds Management Team to discuss and seek ideas how we could better communicate with our staff. It was determined that we often print off material and post on bulletin boards around our shops but it appears that employees pay little attention to those postings and thus seem to never know about the announcements or upcoming events they pertain to. The idea was born to get a TV mounted on the wall of a common area and run a slide-show that consisted of the information we wanted our teams to know about. We used building 747 as the testing ground for this idea and a 43” TV was purchased, mounted, and linked to a computer that runs slides on a loop all-day, every day for all to see. These slides contain information like weather, birthdays in the department, reminders for things like benefits sign-up period, Grounds Accident-Free Days, upcoming meetings or events, pictures of accomplishments, pictures of employees in action, and even the new Holiday Calendar. This new form of communication has been well-received by all and it is good to see employees gathered around it viewing the slides as they rotate through.
