GROUNDS CELEBRATES TEXAS ARBOR DAY
Every year the SSC Grounds department celebrates Texas Arbor Day on the Texas A&M campus by planting a tree. This year Neil Fletcher and David Rath made arrangements to plant two Live Oak trees at the All Faiths Chapel. These plantings would replace trees that previously died and had been removed. The plan was supposed to be a quick one hour job but as the work progressed challenges arose requiring more associates to bring soil and turf to the site. Every associate that arrived jumped right in to help with the tasks necessary. The challenges the crew faced derived from previous existing tree roots and soil quality. When planting trees, we want to be sure the tree has a quality environment to ensure a great transition from living in a pot to living in the soil and to provide a great home to root into. Ensuring the tree’s quality assurance and to help the crew leave their shift on time so that they can start their weekend and be with their families, required more hands to help get it done. Originally I had come to take photos of the new trees commemorating Texas Arbor Day 2020, however almost three hours later I felt that more of the story showed the team work, respect and dedication among the grounds crew. Even as it was clear that associates were driving by on their way back to finish their shift, those same associates stopped to see if help was needed. It is evident this department has great leaders that help create a cohesive team.
